The Purpose of Work Is Not Merely To Hope For A Better Quality of Life

How does your "Ideal Way" of Life look like? Are you someone who knows how to "Enjoy" Life?

Nowadays, whenever we talk about living, most of us right off the bat would think of Time and Money; as if we ought to possess the wealth and time in order to truly enjoy Life to the fullest. I would certainly have to disagree in this regard. Whether or not you appreciate your own way of Life largely depends on your attitude and perception towards it. The premise of truly enjoying Life has got nothing to do with the amount of time you have on hand, neither is the amount of wealth accumulated along the way. Instead, it all boils down to whether each one of us is hardworking enough to put effort into everyday living so as to live Life meaningfully. The definition of being hardworking here is not simply concentrating all efforts in only your full-time job to maximize income in hopes of a better materialistic life, but rather, it is about keeping the curiosity alive in every single matter, big or small, that you come in contact with everyday and not limiting yourself in experiencing as well as learning to appreciate Life outside of your job.

On the surface, this concept may sound easy to you, but it is definitely not something that can be fully grasped within a day or two. Humans, in modern times, are used to the hustle and bustle of city life and every tasks that we undertake require efficiency together with pace and every attention is put into having convenience in our everyday lives. Our judgement whether something is good or bad stems from only two criteria: 'Will this thing be practical and easy to use?' and 'Will this thing be of any advantage to me?'.  When you are accustomed to living Life on the fast lane, you realized you begin to feel lost the moment you have some time to slow down and take a breather. The more convenience that we expect to rely on - everyday commodities such as food, clothes, housing, transportation, and entertainment - the easier we tend to gripe about the inconsequential details. This is because we expect any of these processes to be efficient and any mistakes are intolerable. Additionally, our inflated sense of egotism requires us to have each services provided to be tailor-made to suit our own tastes. As long as the services do not meet our standards, a feeling of dissatisfaction arises.

With all things considered, there can be only one conclusion derived: What is left in this so-called 'way of life'? For the majority of us, there can only be a consumerist mentality. It is only through the constant acquisition and consumption of these goods and services that we can justify all sense of logic and standards in Life.

Cultivating the sense of 'Feel' toward all surroundings

The only problem is, if all you know is how to acquire ever more things in your Life, does it mean you have also acquired the everything there is to Life? Try imagining yourself if you live in a place where there are no such excessive convenience and no easy access to any of your everyday commodities with any of your hard earned cash, what exactly is left of your Life?

For example, there are 2 people riding their mountain bikes in the wilderness. One is riding it with the intention of exercising and losing weight, so he focuses his energy on riding his bike from point A to point B; the other likes getting in touch with nature and photography, and hence focuses his attention on chirping of the birds and the sunlight casting shadows on the trees and flowers along the way. There are 2 people seemingly traveling on the same path, but the former feels tired and his legs sore from the ride while the latter makes good use of his sensory experiences, and his eyes and soul are rewarded with what beautiful nature has on offer. What causes this differences? The difference is in the sense of 'Feel' and this acquired sense is something that requires effort and practice.

Besides using money as your motivation at work just so you can flaunt your wealth at the expense of everything else there is in Life, even if the most beautiful of things were to appear right in front of you, you would simply turn a blind eye toward it. Simply because you do not have enough sensory experience yet and your mind just could not find that correct medium to connect with the experience.

I often like to advocate, besides committing illegal crimes and putting your life at risk, the idea of trying out everything else out there in Life. For each and every experience, given the right time in the future, can bring about an influence on your life far beyond your imagination.
